Niche Saturation

Over the years I have seen a lot of forums come and go including my own. At different periods of time the saturation seems to come and go.

When you start a forum how much research do you do on how many other forums are trying to do what you're doing? Does it ultimately matter to you or do you consider yourself to have enough endurance to outlast some of the other startups?
