Writing notes

When you read a book, do you tend to take notes? Perhaps it’s to mark pages you want to re-read at a later time. Or, to look up the definition of a word. Do you write in the book itself?
I don’t like to write notes IN the book. I find I tend to write too much & it looks messy. So what I do is have pen & paper with me always & jot down important things I’d like to remember.

If I'm reading a theological book, I'll definitely take notes in a separate notepad. I'll quote things and then put down the page number as reference well, so I can return to it again if need be.
