Is funding a challenge for your forum?

To run a forum, one would need to invest on buying softwares, running ads on some bigger forums and a lot of other approaches. How do you raise funds to sustain your forum?

It would have to come out of paychecks. Well, my credit is bad so loans or a no-go and it's difficult to get people to donate.

Anyway, funding via paychecks isn't a big deal, if you got a steady job. Who has tried funding this way?
