What forum software did you start with?

Whether you've been in the forum administration game for 20 years or a month, what software did you start with? Compared to all the other options at the time what made you choose it?

My first forum probably would have used either Zetaboards or Forumotion.

A forum script that was so simple it had no admin panel, no account system, no db. You just typed in whatever name you want and make a post. It was a complete disaster. I next tried a hosted forum from ProBoards. It was junk. So I figured out how to host my own and started with phpBB. This was around 2001.

I've used a lot since then. Currently, I use Xenforo, and I love it.

My first real forum was on phpBB I think. It was in the mid 2010s. It was probably a supplement to my employment blog, but I really feel that my first passionate project was a business forum on phpBB. I was inspired by Lisa Irby's Website Babble (now gone). Her forum was on vBulletin.

Anyway, I got into all this forum creation because I was a poster on Postloop on the time. It was huge then.

For me it was the greatest experience. I learned about forum management without spending money on premium software

I started playing with phpBB software on cPanel, but I couldn't understand spam bots and they overran my forum and I gave up.
